Web Hosting and Static IP Addresses
All web hosting programs use an integral part called the IP address. The reason for this importance is that visitors are lead to a site through the IP address. Thus if you know the IP address of a site, it is possible to reach the site by just typing in its IP address without mentioning the url.
Shared and static IP addresses are the two types of available IP addresses. As the name implies, shared IP addresses are IP addresses that are shared by two or more sites. It is ok to use shared IP addresses if you don’t require much security in your website.
However if you own an ecommerce website, or a website with confidential information, it is better to use a static IP address for your website. This is because it is only sites that have static IP addresses which can use SSL encryption.
When people transmit sensitive data over the internet to or from your ecommerce or confidential site, there may be a need to encrypt this data. This is done to make sure that the sensitive data does not fall in the wrong hands or eyes of the wrong person.
As SSL does not work on shared IP addresses, this protective measure can be used only on sites with static IP addresses. The second benefit to using static IP addresses in your website involves ftp transfers.
Websites that have anonymous ftp transfers, where it is possible for anyone to download files off a site, need to have a static IP address to do this.It is because of these two reasons that people prefer using static IP addresses in their sites.
However if you are not specific about confidentiality in your site and don’t have any ftp transfers to be made from your site, it is more than sufficient to use a shared IP address for your website.
